Reading Series Two

Reading Series Two materials are appropriate for first and second grade students on grade level and for older students in need of intervention. These materials include a book set, Foundational Skills Teacher’s Guides for phonics instruction, and Close Reading Teacher’s Guides for comprehension instruction. The materials can be purchased separately or can be used together to deliver a full complement of reading instruction.

The Reading Series Two Classroom Set contains suggested materials for delivering a full complement of Reading Series Two instruction to a small group. Each set includes one Reading Series Two Foundational Skills Teacher's Guide, six word chain card decks, one Reading Series Two Close Reading Teacher's Guide, and six copies of each Reading Series Two book. For whole-group instruction, the purchase of additional book sets is recommended.

Reading Series Two Foundational Skills Teacher’s Guides contain explicit, systematic, book-by-book instruction that supports teachers in the delivery of evidence-based foundational skills routines with a focus on silent e and r-controlled (Bossy-r) syllables; contrasting these syllable types with closed and open syllables; and reading and spelling words with silent e, Bossy-r, single long vowel, and soft c and g spellings. The instruction also supports teachers in introducing a variety of syllable division strategies to further students’ understanding of how to divide and read multisyllabic words and includes teacher-directed analysis of morphemes, such as inflectional suffixes and derivational affixes. Once students have been taught these important skills, they can apply what they know to Reading Series Two books. Foundational Skills Teacher's Guides include book-by-book progress monitoring assessments and periodic formative assessments.

Reading Series Two Close Reading Teacher’s Guides contain scripted, book-by-book instruction that supports teachers as they model or scaffold students in the process of analyzing the setup, initiating event, and resolution of a story using Flyleaf’s Reading Series Two Story Grammar Bookmarks or the text structure of an informational text using annotation bookmarks and graphic organizers. Responsibility for implementing text comprehension strategies is gradually released to students as the series progresses and students begin to anticipate elements of narrative structure and become comfortable with the literate language (connecting words, mental-state verbs, and feeling words) used in discussions of story relationships and characters’ thoughts and feelings. Additionally, students will begin to anticipate the text structure and text features of informational texts and poems. Throughout the series, students can practice important strategic reading behaviors, such as thinking and talking about the text and illustrations, understanding nuances in word meaning, making inferences, reflecting deliberately on understanding, grappling with and identifying text structure, and examining the author’s craft.
The Reading Series Two Book Set is a collection of engaging and authentic decodable books in a range of text types that includes narratives, informational texts, and poetry. These texts are tied to a systematic phonics scope & sequence and give students extensive practice in reading high-frequency words and single-syllable and multisyllabic words with consonant digraph, silent e, single long vowel, soft c and g, and r-controlled vowel spellings.
